Sri Thyagarajaswami of Thiruvarur is one of the most revered forms of Lord Shiva and is the presiding deity of the historic Thyagaraja Temple in Thiruvarur, Tamil Nadu. The temple is celebrated for its ancient Saiva tradition, magnificent architecture, and the unique Ajapa Natanam, the divine dance associated with Lord Thyagaraja.
According to temple tradition, Lord Vishnu worshipped Lord Shiva in the form of Somaskanda, and the sacred image of Thyagarajaswami was later brought to Thiruvarur by the Chola king Mucukunda. The deity is especially associated with divine grace, spiritual wisdom, protection, and liberation.
Thiruvarur is also famous for its grand Chariot Festival, one of the most spectacular temple festivals of Tamil Nadu. The enormous temple chariot carrying Lord Thyagarajaswami attracts thousands of devotees who gather to witness the sacred procession.
